Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Monoecious or occasionally dioecious trees, shrubs, or annual or perennial herbs.

Stems: Leafy branches with watery sap, often deciduous, subtended by small, scale-like leaves (termed phyllanthoid branching).

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Margins entire. Short-petiolate. Stipules present.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary cymes, these usually highly condensed, sometimes reduced to solitary flowers. Flowers unisexual. Calyx lobes 4–6, imbricate or decussate. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens in staminate flower (2)3–5(–15); filaments distinct or connate; anthers extrorse; pistillate flower stamens absent or rarely represented by staminodes. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), (2)3(–12)-celled; ovules 2 per cell; styles distinct or connate at base, bifid or rarely entire. Staminate flower ovary absent, rarely present and vestigial.

Fruit: Fruit usually an explosively dehiscent capsules; occasionally fleshy; the valves separating from a ± persistent column. Seeds (1)2 per cell; seed coat dry and thin; rarely thickened and bony.
